Well since I got it working, the next step was to make it look good, i.e. I’m pretty sure I had tried similar test cases on my older Win XP machines but the game wouldn’t launch there. * ran the *.exe as Admin user (recommended by many)Īnd if I remember correctly it worked as this point. ![]() * most notably, did not run the *.exe in compatibility mode (actually it didn’t work in compatibility but worked without it) * installed the game and applied the patch (the single patch v1.01 HW:C ever received) So how did I make it to work on my machine? A lot of testing was involved until I could find just the right recipe to work for me (different people have reported different ways to make it work) and here it is: The edge of the screen is off but at least it’s working so it’s a good start anyway. The good old HW:C menu screen, the menu music playing. And well what do you know, after trying out tons of tricks and pieces of advice, fiddling with Virtual Drives and Virtual Images, running virtualized Windows envs and playing around with registry settings, command-line options … in the end I was flabbergasted when after all that long time, it got past the Sierra and Barking Dog clips (that was the fartherst I had ever managed to get, used to crash after the Barking Dog clip was over) THERE IT WAS! Would just install the game and see if it works, and as usual put it away seeing it didn’tīut I recently decided to really get down to business and try to get it running on my current Windows version, Win 8.1. I never got round to seriously trying, though. And indeed, the one and only time I was able play through the whole game was when I first got it and that was on my very first PC which ran Windows 98. I wasn’t able to get HW: C running even on Windows XP …Īnd so machines changed, OS versions changed and with every newer version it would have been increasingly more technically difficult to get the game working. ![]() The original Homeworld game is known to be quite stable, running OK on newest systems, but Homeworld: Cataclysm is difficult to run on any modern system. I managed to make the notoriously elusive video game, Homeworld: Cataclysm, to run on the newest available Windows version, Win 8.1! Homeworld: Cataclysm is a great game, and it belongs to my favourite Homeworld series. Quite some time ago, I managed to do something so staggering that I am up to this day impressed by the results.
